GS칼텍스와 맺은 30년의 인연. 싱가폴법인 트레이더 John Driscoll의 이야기 1

On July 1, 2004, I joined GS Caltex S’pore Pte Ltd (GSPL) as a Senior Products Trading Manager.

At 50 years of age, I had worked almost 30 years as an oil trader for oil companies in Los Angeles, San Francisco and, since 1984, the Republic of Singapore where I currently reside and hold citizenship. While my hiring into GS Caltex occurred late in my career, the knowledge, experience, understanding and sensitivity acquired in my 8 years here exceeds my entire pre-GS Caltex career.

Having survived 4 corporate takeovers (including the last one when Exxon took over my former employer Mobil in 1999) and a stint as an energy news executive, my longest tour of duty was 5 years. So GS Caltex has set a personal record.

So this is the story of my journey with GS Caltex. My association dates back three decades to 1984 when I sold a crude oil cargo to a company then known as Bando Lucky Goldstar. It’s been a long, enjoyable adventure with many valuable insights to share.

My purpose is not to bore you with personal recollections so much as to share the positive influences and lessons that GS Caltex has bestowed upon me. This is not to imply that it was always rosy. My assignment started exactly two weeks before the labor disruption at Yeosu in July, 2004. A few years later our trading team navigated through a financial crisis, near meltdown of the global financial system, the Lehman bankruptcy, all-time record high crude prices followed by a violent collapse. Oil trading inherently involves varying measures of volatility and anxiety, surprises and shocks, some unexpectedly fortunate, others nearly catastrophic.

Adversity and uncertainty will test you, but you have a better chance of surviving and even prospering if you are privileged to serve on a selfless, hard-working committed team like GS Caltex that can accept your diverse background, teach you what it means to hoist a glass of Soju and steer you towards the values and principles that have built this Company. What I learned during my tenure and, sadly, what I will takeaway on retirement has made a profound difference in all aspects of my life, personal as well as professional.

It is tempting to quote the refrain from the popular rock anthem from the Eagles, “Hotel California” (which some GS Caltex traders have been known to warble in late night lounges after a few Sojus), “You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave”. GS Caltex has left its imprint on my soul and will stay with me for the rest of my life.

제가 GS칼텍스 싱가폴법인(GSPL)의 제품 트레이딩 수석 매니저가 되어 GS칼텍스와의 여정을 시작하게 된 것은 2004년 7월 1일이었습니다.

당시 저의 나이는 오십이었고, 로스엔젤레스, 샌프란시스코, 그리고 84년 이후에는 지금의 시민권을 받아 살고 있는 싱가포르에서 거의 30년 동안이나 석유제품 트레이더로서의 삶을 살아가던 중이었답니다. GS칼텍스인으로 지내온 8년 간의 기간은 비록 제 직장경력의 가장 후반부이지만, 그 동안 제가 쌓은 지식과 경험, 업에 대한 이해와 감각은 그 이전 모든 직장생활 동안 쌓아온 결과를 압도합니다.

음~ 8년이라… 제 직장생활의 기록갱신이네요. 1999년 Exxon의 Mobil인수를 포함하여 네 차례의 인수합병에도 끝까지 살아남았던 기간과 에너지 전문지의 임원으로서 재직했던 기간까지 포함하여 제가 한 직장에서 가장 오래 머문 기간은 5년이었으니 말입니다.

30년이란 시간 그 이상의 가치를 준 GS칼텍스

이 글은 제가 GS칼텍스와 함께한 여정에 대한 이야기입니다. 생각해보니 처음 인연을 맺은 것은 ‘반도 럭키 금성’으로 알려진 회사에 원유를 팔았던 1984년으로, 거의 30년을 거슬러 올라가는군요. 제게 있어 그 긴 시간들은 많은 사람들과 공유하고 싶은 인사이트가 가득한, 즐거운 모험과도 같았습니다.

제가 이 글을 쓰는 목적은 GS칼텍스가 제게 주었던 긍정적인 영향과 교훈들을 공유하기 위한 것이지, 사적인 기억들을 주저리주저리 늘어놓으며 여러분들을 지루하게 하려는 것은 아닙니다. 물론 GS칼텍스와 함께 한 시간들이 언제나 장밋빛이었던 것만은 아닙니다. 제가 출근을 시작한 것은 2004년 7월로 여수 공장 파업으로부터 정확히 2주 전이었습니다. 또한, 몇 년이 지나지 않아 우리 트레이딩팀은 리먼 브라더스 파산과 글로벌 금융 시스템의 붕괴, 그리고 그로 인한 사상 최고의 기록적인 초고유가 상황을 헤쳐나가야만 했습니다. 본질적으로 원유 트레이딩은 변동성과 불안, 놀람과 충격, 기대치 않은 행운과 예상치 못한 재앙 등 수많은 변수들을 포함합니다.

이 빌딩 안에서 일어나는 행운과 역경. 이 모두를 소주 한 잔의 동료애가 힘이 되었습니다.

물론 역경과 불확실성은 당신을 시험에 들게 하겠지만, 개개인이 가진 다양한 배경을 인정하고, 소주 한 잔을 기울일 때의 동료애를 가르쳐주고, 회사가 만들어질 때부터 지켜온 원칙과 가치로 당신을 이끄는 GS칼텍스와 같은 회사에서 일하는 당신이라면 어떠한 역경과 불확실성도 오히려 성공의 기회로 전환할 수 있는 행운을 갖게 될 것입니다. 은퇴를 앞둔 시점에서, 제가 GS칼텍스에서 배운 모든 것들이 업무는 물론 일상을 포함한 제 삶의 구석구석까지 너무나 많은 영향을 주었음을 새삼 깨닫습니다.

이쯤 되니 GS칼텍스의 몇몇 동료 트레이더들이 소주 몇 잔을 마시고 노래방에서 즐겨 부르는 Eagles 의 Hotel California 가사를 인용하고 싶은 유혹을 떨칠 수가 없군요.

“당신은 언제든지 체크아웃 할 수 있지만, 결코 떠날 수는 없습니다.”

GS칼텍스는 나의 영혼에 평생 지워지지 않을 흔적을 남겼답니다.
